--------------------------------- Project Full Name --------------------------------- RSS Library for Java --------------------------------- Project Purpose and Summarization --------------------------------- This is a joint project of the authors of two Java news reader applications (HotSheet and Risotto [part of jsurfer]). We intend to unify the common parts into a library which can be used by any developer who needs to address those issues in their application. The main important goals of this projects are: 1: Ability to both read RSS channels and write them. 2: Ability to store off the news items read from RSS channels but to skip that step for programs that don't require storage. Programs that don't need anything but the ability to read a current channel can stick to the Channel and Item objects and blow off the ChannelStore and ItemStore. 3: Better modelling of the pieces that make up RSS channels in order to support 0.92 and 0.93 channel types. 4: Use interfaces to describe pieces of the library where we think there might be multiple different implementations (for example database storage vs. XML). 5: Provide functionality that can prevent duplicates from getting into the item storage. 6: Simple filtering can be done on the stored set of news items so you can pick out only those for a particular set of channels, within a date range, that match a particular regex expression, etc. 7: Provide events and listeners that allows developers to build a Model-View-Controller application around the library (as well as more traditional linear applications). 8: Give support for retrieving and handling OCS channel lists. 9: Threaded execution of RSS retrieval. 10: The library has a clear separation between retrieving RSS and parsing it. 11: The library would ship with Unit Tests, Javadocs and some sample programs. --------------------------------- License --------------------------------- GNU Library or "Lesser" Public License (LGPL) http://www.opensource.org/licenses/lgpl-license.html --------------------------------- Project Public Description --------------------------------- The RSS Library will provide a convenient Java API for handling news channels and metadata about them. Different syntax formats (like RSS 0.90, 0.91 and 1.0) for channels will be supported, as well as we plan to allow retrieving channel information through OCS. --------------------------------- Project Unix Name --------------------------------- informa --------------------------------- Project approved by sourceforge --------------------------------- May 1, 2002
